Why Your Gums Bleed (And How to Fix It)

Bleeding gums are extremely common but almost always preventable. A simple 5-step plan to fix it within 2 weeks.

May 24, 2026 ยท Dr. Esther Lukwago

Bleeding gums when you brush or floss is never normal, but it's extremely common and almost always reversible at home.

What causes it

The most common cause is gingivitis โ€” the earliest stage of gum disease. Plaque builds up along the gumline, the gums become inflamed, and they bleed at the slightest touch.

The 5-step fix

  1. Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled brush for two full minutes
  2. Floss every day
  3. Use a fluoride toothpaste (not charcoal)
  4. Rinse with warm salt water for one week
  5. See a dentist if it's not better in two weeks
